Proactive Pest Solutions was created in response to a need in the southeast Queensland market for a professional, proactive approach to pest control services for your home.

When we were founded, we observed that the industry was almost exclusively comprised of pest control service operators who functioned for their clients purely on a reactive basis. As a result of this, people’s homes were becoming overrun with general pests and termites – and only then was the issue being addressed. Once overrun, the treatments that are required to mitigate ongoing risks and eliminate these pests required the use of more chemicals and in more locations on a regular basis to overcome and control the problem.

At Proactive Pest Solutions, we approach things differently.

By being proactive in our approach to pest control services, we help homeowners keep pests at bay. We achieve this by providing a regular, scheduled treatment plan designed to suit your needs and budget and keep pests in control all of the time.

We take the stress out of pest control by keeping track of your service intervals and keeping in regular contact with you to ensure there are no problems during the interim treatment period. Ashley Dando

Founding Partner and Director

Ashley Dando

Ashley Dando is a director and one of the founding partners of Proactive Pest Solutions.

Ashley started his career in the UK and progressed from a trade school apprentice to project manager and achieving an honours degree in business management somewhere in the middle. The majority of Ashley’s career has been spent in middle and senior management in the UK and Australia and believes his greatest achievements have been as a direct result of his ability to create successful and driven teams.

Ashley is a licensed builder and licensed building inspector. He established Jim’s Building Inspections – QLD in 2015 and within a few short years had grown this division to become one of the largest regions in Australia. During this time Ashley helped develop the skills and shape the futures of more than 20 franchisees. He created an enviable reputation in the process for someone who would demonstrate that through a steadfast belief in teamwork and a dedication to customer service you can achieve great things.

Some of Ashley’s recent achievements include being awarded franchisor of the year, 4 years running and his team achieving the award for the second highest star rating as voted by the public. Yet Ashley’s most notable achievement, and one that he is most proud of receiving is the coveted “Diamond award” for franchisee support, 3 years running. This was awarded to Ashley as a direct result of his support and dedication to his team of franchisees and put him in a league of only three other franchisors to have ever won this.

Ashley believes that none of this would have been possible without the support of his wife Sally and son Harrison, so when he is not working, he is likely to be spending time on the beach with them. Either that or indulging in his passion for skydiving!​

Dominic Toole

Dominic Toole is a founding Partner and Director of Proactive Pest Solutions.

After a very successful career with Telstra, which he started as a telecommunications apprentice and finished in middle management, Dominic followed his passion and moved into the construction industry. This time he started as an apprentice carpenter and then he and his wife Kylie started DJT Builders as a licensed builder.

Dominic and Kylie relocated to the Sunshine Coast and as a licensed building inspector, licensed pest inspector, and licensed pool inspector became Franchisees of Jim’s Building Inspection Mooloolaba. Dominic established and grew a very successful Building Inspection Business. His success was based on listening, communicating, and providing excellent customer service, twice winning Queensland Building Inspector of the year.

During his career as a Building Inspector Dominic identified that his clients would invest large amounts of their life savings into property and then fail to protect it against damage caused from general pests and termites. With over 35 years experience in providing excellent customer service and a strong focus on programmed maintenance, Dominic has worked with his business partners to found Proactive Pest Solutions to assist clients by managing their pest control needs.

Dominic and Kylie currently live in Maroochydore. The weather and lifestyle of the surrounding region go hand in hand with the interests they both have, this includes going to the beach, cycling and spending time with family and friends.​

Peter Retallick

Senior Technician

Peter Retallick

Peter is a senior technician at proactive pest solutions and an integral part of the team. He commenced his career in the pest industry whilst working in his fathers’ company in the late 1990s. Whilst working for several national and multi-national pest control companies as a technician and senior termite technician until 2017, he gained experience in products and methods not previously used, which in turn created an even greater thirst for knowledge in Peter’s chosen field. Peter enjoys the challenges his role at Proactive provides him with and is always looking for the safest, most environmentally friendly solution to his customers pest problems.

Regardless of what your pest problem is, Peter is likely to have a solution, due to his vast experience in integrated pest management for both residential and commercial environments, including chemical and non-chemical options.

Peter provides his clients with a quality service that leaves them feeling safe and protected so they no longer need to worry about their problem pests, this is the very reason Peter’s customers ask him back year after year.

When Peter isn’t dealing with your pest problems, he enjoys spending time with his wife and 5 children who are also budding entomologist’s and environmental warriors, or perhaps he will be found running up and down the basketball court coaching his daughter’s basketball team.​

Colin Shurey

Colin joined the Proactive Pest Solutions team as a pest technician in 2020 and his infectious smile and endearing personality has been greeting our customers ever since.

Colin started out as a carpenter / joiner in the UK and Europe. In early 2000 Colin moved himself and his family to Australia and soon decided that he liked finding the creatures that live inside timber more than he enjoyed building with it. Soon after Colin decided he would transfer his skills and commenced a career in the pest control industry working for several local pest companies where he gained a great deal of experience and his QLD pest control licence.

Colin eventually set up his own pest control company where he enjoyed providing the local community with pest control services. 
When the opportunity arose to join Proactive Pest Solutions’ Colin took this opportunity allowing him to spend more time fulfilling his passion for pest control and less time with the running of a business.

When Colin isn’t serving the community with pest related advice, he can be found serving the community as an auxiliary firefighter.​

Jeremy’s career began in the building industry and after several years on site he decided it was time for a change and began a new career in pest management, joining the Proactive Pest Solutions team as a pest technician.

Jeremy’s passion for pest problems and customer satisfaction is shown within his work alongside his enthusiastic personality and care for long lasting results.

Cockroaches

Nothing can make someone scream as much a cockroach! Lets face it, no one likes cockroaches, there’s nothing good about them! A key thing to consider with cockroaches is treatment without delay is paramount to controlling the population and the spread throughout your home. By the time you see one out in the open there is usually a large and growing population of them where you can’t see them!

Cockroaches spread diseases and bacteria very easily to humans. Controlling and eliminating them from your home is a key aspect of ensuring a healthy home.

Spiders

The most common spiders we address are webbing spiders and ground dwelling spiders (around 50 species in SEQ). Both require different treatment methods due to the types of harborage (where they live) and how they travel and hunt for food.

Some spiders are beneficial around the home however we do appreciate that spiders can be like snakes, some people do not like them at all and want them gone completely. That’s where we can help!

The presence of rats and mice is usually first noticed by homeowners due to their scratching being heard (usually in your roof) or their droppings left in various places around your home.

We regularly find evidence of rats in the roofs of houses we inspect and the damage they leave behind. Rats and mice love to chew electrical cables, plastic water pipes and even timber. The damage is not usually found until a leak develops, your power cuts out or you see signs of gnawing on timber around the home.

If you suspect rats or mice in your home we can offer a variety of solutions to address the problem. Trapping can also be used in high pressure environments and where rodent bait is unsuccessful. We assess each property to make sure we are offering the best solution for you.

Silverfish

Have you been finding holes in your clothes? Carpet being eaten? Silverfish may be present in your home!

Silverfish are one of the most common pests that cause damage to these and many other items around your home. Silverfish are known to cause damage to clothes, carpets, plaster linings, photos and books (amongst a very large list of items they can damage).

Fleas

Fleas are most commonly associated with your pet cats and dogs. Whilst we don’t treat the animals themselves we can provide a suitable treatment of your property and provide specialist advice on the treatment of your animals. Effective treatment of both your home and your pets is key to a successful treatment. The order and timing of these is critical so if you suspect fleas in your animals or around your home please contact us without delay. Mosquitos

Mossies and Queensland they just go together so well! I could write paragraphs on why they are bad but let’s keep it short and simple. The bites sting A LOT but most of all they spread disease, did you know they are the worlds most deadly animal. Yes you read that correctly, around the world the tiny mossie is responsible for the most deaths year on year!

Household mosquito treatments are something most people don’t even realize is an option around their home. Bees

Did you know we work with a number of active bee keepers across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. We work with these other businesses to try and re-home bee problems instead of us using chemical treatments. Some bees are not possible to relocate though and a chemical treatment is required to eliminate those problems.

By using an experienced beekeeper (Apiary) some clients don’t even get charged AND we are doing our part for the environment by saving the bee colonies which.

People usually find they have bees in their homes by the smell of a sickly sweet substance in odd places, the sound of the hive inside a wall or ceiling cavity or they notice bee’s entering in large numbers in a small opening around the home. Funnel Ants

Funnel ants are those incredibly annoying tiny ants that build large soil mounds on your grass, usually after rain. They can cause erosion, damage your mower and even become trip hazards around your home. With one treatment we can now guarantee total elimination of these annoying pests. No multiple visits, no returning each year when they return. One treatment and they are gone!

Treatment of these can only occur when the are active. If you know rain is coming and you have a history of them in your lawn then give us a call in advance and we can put a booking in ready to go once the rain has moved on.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small insects that feed on your blood, often causing itchy bites. They tend to live around your bed and travel on clothing, furniture, bedding and luggage. Bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases, their bites are very aggravating and in a colony can be aggressive.

Depending on what has been effected by the bed bugs will depend on the treatment for them. Generally a mix of specialised chemicals, heat and vacuuming is used to eliminate a bed bug problem.

Bed bugs commonly appear after travelling. There’s a reason my mum always said to never put your suitcase on your bed!

Termite Bait Stations / Termite Monitoring

Termite bait stations are a form of managing your termite risk. They involve placing termite baits or termite monitoring stations around the perimeter of your home (on average every 3m apart depending on the system used)

Not every property is suitable for a chemical barrier, usually due to the type of construction methods used in the home. Using termite bait stations is a very effective way of still actively managing your risk of termites around your home.

There are two main termite baiting systems on the market today for professional pest managers. They both contain an attractant and a termicide in a single bait station. Until recently termite bait stations had to be loaded with sacrificial timber attractants and checked on a very regular basis so termite activity could be detected and then termicide could be added to the active termites. The time and cost involved in these systems commonly saw them being neglected shortly after installation. By using the latest products on the market we are able to reduce our visits to your property to check the bait stations thereby reducing the cost to you.

Termite bait stations are environmentally safe and very safe for humans and pets. They are securely placed in the ground in locked containers so little fingers or paws cant access them.

Sunshine Coast Termite Barriers & Termite Bait Stations

Chemical Termite Barriers

A chemical barrier is a form of managing your termite risk. They involve the placement of chemical around the full perimeter of your home in the soil above and below the footing. Termites are subterranean meaning they travel through the soil to gain access to your home. By placing a chemical barrier around the home termites are affected by the termicide chemical as they enter the home resulting in death of the termites and their colony.

The chemical choices for termite barriers are quite extensive with many brands, active ingredients and mode of actions in the market place for professional pest managers to choose from. We have spent a great deal of time over the years ensuring we only use the best products on the market that are proven and effective at protecting your home.

Termidor is a highly effective termicide that we use exclusively on our termite barriers. Whilst there are cheaper options available we have found that this product continually provides better protection and a greater coverage of the soil areas when applied correctly. We are proud to be Termidor accredited applicators and use this product with pride.

A correctly applied chemical treatment will last up to 8 years. In some high pressure environments, some additional top ups may be recommended during the course of the 8 year period.

The application process does involve digging the soil around the perimeter of the home to gain access to the footing and also drill and injecting below any concrete paths that may be around the home. Whilst this can be a messy task we take great pride in our work and leave your yard, gardens and paths as clean as we found them to ensure you’re not left cleaning up at the end.

Colin Colin Shurey

Colin joined the Proactive Pest Solutions team as a pest technician in 2020 and his infectious smile and endearing personality has been greeting our customers ever since.

Colin started out as a carpenter / joiner in the UK and Europe. In early 2000 Colin moved himself and his family to Australia and soon decided that he liked finding the creatures that live inside timber more than he enjoyed building with it. Soon after Colin decided he would transfer his skills and commenced a career in the pest control industry working for several local pest companies where he gained a great deal of experience and his QLD pest control licence.

Colin eventually set up his own pest control company where he enjoyed providing the local community with pest control services. 
When the opportunity arose to join Proactive Pest Solutions’ Colin took this opportunity allowing him to spend more time fulfilling his passion for pest control and less time with the running of a business.

When Colin isn’t serving the community with pest related advice, he can be found serving the community as an auxiliary firefighter.

Wasps

Most people at some point in their lives have had a not so pleasant experience with a wasp. The most common being a paper wasp. These nasty little flying insects are very aggressive and protective of their nest when disturbed or threatened. Paper wasps can cause an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) in people and have been found to cause death in people who suffer from anaphylaxis.

Treatment of wasps can be undertaken relatively easily and effectively. If you start to notice nests around the home it can be wise to get them treated sooner rather than later as they do tend to increase in numbers greatly once they become established in an area.
