Pest control is important year-round, but never more so than in the warmer, humid months. Here at Proactive Pest Solutions, we are committed to a proactive approach to pest control rather than proverbially “putting out fires” after problems of pest infestation occur.
What this means is that, rather than being a one-off endeavour, pest control and mitigation is an ongoing commitment. No matter how effective professional pest control measures may be, they do not last forever – and it’s really important to maintain annual pest mitigation treatments to keep your home and your family safe.
How Long Does Pest Control Last?
This is not a simple question to answer. Just like the types of pests you may encounter differ, so too does the length of time pest control treatments last.
General pest control treatments target the most common household insects that can pose problems for you. Other pests can also be targeted where required – termite treatments are an example of this.
These include (but are not limited to):
- Woodlice (roly-poly)
- Bed bugs
Most pest control treatments involve having the skirting boards within your home sprayed with high-grade pesticides. In some cases, your home’s exterior and/or underfloor space will also be treated.
A single treatment does not ever guarantee a lifetime of protection. Treatments must be scheduled and carried out regularly. This should be no less than once per year – but for certain pests, more often may be required to fully eliminate an existing infestation.
So how long do treatments last?
Several factors influence how long treatments are effective. Surfaces that don’t absorb the insecticides (tiles, glass, steel) or those which have oil or dust on them are prone to having the chemicals removed via evaporation or cleaning.
Wood, concrete, and carpeting absorb insecticides, making the treatments much more effective and for longer.
Exterior pests may not come into enough insecticide to be eliminated.
Furthermore, air movement, light, moisture, and temperature all impact how well and how long treatments last.
Generally speaking, pest control treatments will last for 12 months. There are a few exceptions:
ANTS: these require a more ongoing approach and monthly visits for several months to kill the ants, locate the ant nest, and destroy the ant nest. After the issue has been resolved, some areas may require quarterly pest control visits.
TERMITES: annual termite inspections are imperative. Termite treatments can be expensive, and the entire termite colony must be exterminated promptly. Some chemical barriers treatments can last up to seven or eight years; but annual inspection schedules must be maintained.
BED BUGS: unlike other pest treatments, bed bug treatment, when carried out by professionals and the source is discovered and treated, last indefinitely. They may, however, be reintroduced to your home by pets, on luggage, etc.
